This project is developing an Untold Stories CHART App for use (and free upload) by the public and Florida and The Bahamas public school education that focuses on four sites in south Florida and The Bahamas: Egmont Key State Park in Hillsborough, Fort Desoto County Park in Pinellas, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in Miami-Dade County, and Red Bays on Andros island in The Bahamas. Many of these stories are of marginalized groups who encountered violence from the start of Florida state history, and who often had to flee their communities or were forcibly removed by city planners or state military. These sites include (but are not limited to) the stories of the Saltwater Underground Railroad for Black Americans in Miami, the forced removal of Indigenous people to an internment camp on the west coast of Florida, and the violence perpetrated on creole rancho fishing communities on barrier islands. The CHART App includes decolonial re-storying site interpretations, app storytelling podcasts, videos, and historical photos focused on underrepresented narratives in traditional historical accounts and have been developed in stages of consent and active partnership with Miami-Dade’s NAACP, the AMMC, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office.
